Improvedtechnologies in communication have increased the spread and influenceof popular culture (Fiske,2010). I am among many people in the world whose life revolvesaround popular mass consumption. The first way I consume culture isthrough music. I am a fan of modern hip-hop and rock music. I havebeen around to witness the rise of pop icons such as Beyoncé Knowlesand I continue to enjoy the great rhymes composed by the greatNotorious B.I.G. Although I do not like junk food, I find it quiteinevitable to sneak through an outlet and get a pack of French friesor a mug of hot coffee in a McDonalds shop. I understand the risksof being accustomed to this kind of lifestyle, but sometimes it justseems like there is no enough time to get healthy meal or it is quiteexpensive.

Ireact to popular culture with mixed emotions. I am often excited withnew albums, new movies, or new cloth designs, especially with anItalian taste. For example, I cannot wait to have StarWars inmy iPad. Italian suits have always been my style because they areunique and they reflect the persona I would like to be associatedwith. However, I do not have the same excitement about fast foods. Iconsider it a convenience while doing rounds in town. I would like tocook and eat in the house before I settle down in the theatre thanhave a pack of French fries.

Havingthe opportunity to study about popular culture has reinforced mybeliefs about the spread of basic values through dominant cultures. It has also reinforced my beliefs about the manner in whichalternative cultures are treated or perceived (Bennett,2000).The media has been central to the portrayal of popular culture asequivalent to dominant communities while effectively marginalizingminority cultures through ideological pictures and narratives thatreinforce the former at the expense of the latter. For example,images associated with minority groups such as Latinos and Hispanicsusually lack the social power accorded to images of white majorities(Gans,2008). It is common to see a poster photograph of a Latina lady onthe billboards portraying her in a sexist style. On the hand, anadvertisement of an institution will have the photograph of a whitelady with books, thinking about career advancement. Both photographsuse women but they have conflicting messages. Throughout thiscourse, I have also learned that popular culture with the support ofthe modern pervasive mainstream and social media overshadows othercultures (Edensor,2002). For instance, it is common to see heavy commercialspopularizing fast food joints than it is to see one that advertiseshealthy foods. In any case, the former will get more attention thanthe latter. Finally, I have identified a wide gap between liveexperiences and illusionary ideals created by popular culture (Urla,Swedlund, &amp Swedlund, 2007). For example, I have seen younggirls try to slim up so that can look like the idealized woman inpopular culture. Being skinny is associated with being attractive. The truth is that the model of beauty as depicted in popular culturedoes not cut across different cultures, but rather a forcedrepresentation of a few.

Ibelieve that my understanding of popular culture will enable me toinfluence social change. I intend to demonstrate to people thatpopular culture is meant for entertainment and not to be practiced inreal life. Through blogs and talk shows, I have plans to begin amovement that will educate people that popular culture needs no to bereal life because it destroys nature creates unnecessary pressure onthe well-being of individuals.
