Difference between employee training and employee development

Although the terms training and development are used by managersinterchangeably, it is vital to note that they have differentmeanings. Employee training involves the process of equipping anemployee of group of employees with the necessary knowledge andskills essential to carry out specific tasks associated with his orher job (Noe, 2013). The goals of employee training are short term.In other words, employee training ensures that the employee has whatit takes to meet his daily requirements at work. Training isnecessitated by gaps that are identified through observation at theworkplace (Noe, 2013).

On the other hand, employee development focuses on equipping anemployee with knowledge and skills for future promotionopportunities. Employee development focuses on the long term needs ofthe job as opposed to the short term needs of a particular task. Whena manager assigns a new employee an experienced employee to learnvarious aspects from him that is viewed as employee development(Noe, 2013). There are instances where employees interchange theirpositions in such a way that they learn what their colleagues do.This is a form of employee development. Another aspect of employeedevelopment is the fact that it is conducted to individual employeesunlike training which can be conducted to a group of employees (Noe,2013).

Advantages of e-learning and online training programs

There are a number of advantages that are associated with trainingof staff through online programs or e-learning. To start with,e-learning and online training ensures that the learners have accessto the learning materials throughout the whole time. This means thatthe learners can learn on their own unlike in the conventionallearning methods. It is evident that in the modern times, employeesmay be working from different locations across the world. E-learningmakes the training of such employees extremely easy convenient. Theonline training programs may be equipped with video conferencingprograms hence making the learning convenient. Another advantageassociated with e-learning and the online training programs is thatit is cheaper than the conventional training or learning methods. Inthe conventional training sessions, there is need to rent halls, buybooks, reproduce hardcopy notes, as well as hiring the trainers. Ine-learning and online training programs, some of these costs such asrenting halls for training are eliminated (Noe, 2013). Lastly, it isclear that majority of the workers today belong to the generation Ywhich is fascinated by technology. This implies that majority ofemployees will prefer e-learning and online training programs asopposed to conventional training and learning methods.

Innovation leadership

Innovation leadership is a form of leadership in an organizationthat is designed in such a way that it influences the employeesthrough various techniques to be creative and come up with innovativeproducts, ideas and services (Crutchfield, 2013). Innovationleadership involves an innovative leader. It is worth noting that theinnovative leader must not necessary come up with the innovativeidea, but he will see an idea in an employee and employ strategiesthat will translate the idea into a business opportunity.

Innovative leadership is extremely important to an organization.This is a form of leadership that allows the organization to achieveits vision and mission. Additionally, it is clear that the market oftoday is extremely competitive and it is only the organizations thatare coming up with innovative products, ideas and services that arewinning the market (Crutchfield, 2013). Therefore, this form ofleadership would help an organization in terms of competitiveadvantage.
