Descriptionof the Max library

Giventhe case that this is a learning institution, it is important to beconversant with some of the academic facilities found within thecampus that may aid one in having a smooth sail within. One of suchfacilities is the library. This is a place where students obtain thevarious academic resources needed for their studies( It is specially set up to cater for persons whoare currently staff or faculty of the university. However, someoutsiders may be allowed in after meeting a given criteria.

TheUniversity library is named in honor of the Max family as a result ofthe 3 million dollar pledge that the Julien E. Max Foundation made.The library contains some facilities which includes the reading areasbooks stacks located on several floors. It also has an auditoriumand classrooms. These are set aside for instructional facilities. Inparticular, the auditorium has a seating capacity of 124 people andfour wheelchairs ( The auditorium may also be usedfor co-sponsored university events given that at the given point oftime, it is available for use and prior reservations are made throughthe library management.

TheMax library has the aim to provide an enabling and conduciveenvironment for persons inside so that they may be able to benefitconsiderably from carrying out their various academic ventures withinthe university. As a result, it has established some policiesrelating to the use foods within the library. The library managementpermits one to enter its premises with snack foods such as nuts,chips, cookies, pretzels as well as other pre-packaged foods. It,however, does no allow students to enter the library with sandwiches,burgers, pizzas and salads among other greasy foods. The library alsohas the provisions for the students to ensure that they usespill-proof containers to hold their drinks so as to minimize anyform of damage that may be leveled on books through the aversion ofspillage. The library also does not permit one to deliver foods forlibrary users. It also restricts eating and drinking next to themedia equipment, computer workstations, aisles and stacks thatcontain books as well as printers and photocopiers. Library users arealso not permitted to eat or drink while inside the computerlaboratory.

Theinstitution has made plans to ensure that it avails academicmaterials of all fields of study offered by the institution so as tomaintain an element of fairness to all the students. The sectionscovering all the fields are well demarcated and conspicuously so asto provide ease of obtaining a given material that one may be lookingfor.

Thelibrary offers various forms of services ranging from studentservices, graduate student services, faculty services, distanceeducation, instructional services as well as services for individualswho are disabled. Student services include the provision of readingareas for the students ( The students may readaccess the academic material while inside the library and leave thembehind before going out or they could borrow the books in line withthe laid down procedures for borrowing. For one to be able to borrowbooks, the individual must possess a valid borrower’s card. Theloan period is up to 4 weeks with a possibility of renewal for twotimes. Undergraduates are limited to borrowing a total of 20 bookswhile post-graduate students are limited to borrowing up to 40 booksat a go. This measure is put up so as to avert any situation wheresome students are denied the access to learning resources. Onreturning the loaned books, the students may drop them off at any ofthe two book drops that are located outside the library. One of themis located in the upper parking lot that is towards the northern sideof the building. The other book drop is adjacent to the entrance doorof the library. It is important to note that video CDs or DVDs arenot supposed to be placed in the book drops.

Thelibrary management has a policy that is leveled towards persons whohold on the books beyond the loan period ( Thereexist a charge of 25¢ per item per day for the entire period thatthe individual overstays with the books. There is a fine of 50¢ peritem per day for the entire time that an individual overstays withCDs and DVDs. The payment of these fines is made by cash, check,money order Mastercard or Visa.

Thelibrary also contains some reserve materials, which cannot beborrowed because they are unique and hard to find. They can only beaccessed from the library and left behind. Such material includes theones found in the Alabama/Gulf Coast collections. Some of thesematerials are accessible online through the student, graduate orfaculty ID ( These materials are either circulatingor non-circulating. There is a difference between reserve materialsand reference materials. Most of the reference materials are found inthe open stacks within the reference department that is located inthe second Floor North. These materials are, however,non-circulating.

TheMa Library has computer workstations that work on the first come,first served basis because they are limited in number( However, priority is accorded to USA students whoare currently enrolled at the University, staff and faculty who areinvolved in doing various forms of research within the library. Anindividual is only supposed to use one computer station at a time soas to provide an opportunity for other persons to access the otherworkstations. Users are also not permitted to delete, add or modifythe installed software on the university computers and just let themremain the way they are. The library management also has a strictpolicy against the downloading, viewing, printing or sending to theunlawful material by the use of university computer.

Thelibrary also has a wireless internet connection platform wherestudents may bring in their laptops and access the online librarymaterials as well as other materials. It, however, dissuades thepatrons from using the wireless platforms to make financialtransactions since the management cannot guarantee the security ofsuch transactions ( The university has also blockedthe printing capabilities of documents sent from the laptops forsecurity purposes. Students enrolled at the University may make useof their TRACcards to enable them print emailed or saved documentsfrom the workstations found in room 128. They may also sue theAcademic Research Center or PAWS computers that are located along thewindows located within the reference section in the Second FloorNorth.

Inconclusion, the Max library offers a lot of opportunities to anypatrons who may be interested in the use of its facilities to conducta given academic venture. Students stand to benefit greatly frommaking good use of the university resources.
