Assignment4: Individual and Family Needs in the Post-Modern World

Formany years, people have been convinced that they only need food, shelter, and clothing to lead a satisfactory life. Althoughindividuals and families in the contemporary society need more thanthe three items, it is evident that the needs have not changed, buthuman perception about what is needs has changed significantly. Thismeans that families and individuals have expanded the list and thequality of what they need to lead a satisfactory life, but inessence, one can still live well with the three basic items. Thispaper will discuss five items that the post-modern families andindividuals need to feel that they are leading a satisfactory life.

Initially, people felt that they needed food, but the contemporary society islooking for nutritional satisfaction. The quantity of food is nolonger the issue, but the quality as well as the content. Accordingto Sarwar, Sarwar, Qadri &amp Moghal (2013) food is now perceived asa key determinant of stability of human health. For example, individuals and families can use information that is readilyavailable in online and offline sources to establish the relationshipbetween the value of feed they consume and their health. To this end,a family and individual members of the post-modern society needs toachieve nutritional satisfaction by accessing quality and high valuefoods.

Qualityand affordable shelter

Thetraditional perception that one needs a house to live has beenadvanced to a notion that quality and affordable housing is requiredto help individuals and families lead a satisfying life. A researchconducted by Smith (2014) concluded that affordable and adequatehousing should now be seen as the basis for developing a stable and astrong community. This confirms that the human understanding of thesignificance as well as the role played by place in influencing thewell being of families and individuals has increased over time. Therefore, a psychologically satisfying shelter should have adequateamenities, decent, located in a safe neighborhood, and within theearning capacity of the family or an individual resident.

Peopleused to wear clothes with the objective of covering and protectingtheir bodies, but the modern society has developed psychologicalneeds or reasons for proper clothing. Members of the modern societywear clothes for identification purposes, decoration, and status. Allthese functions are distinguished by the type as well as the qualityof one’s attire. Research has shown that the type of clothesdetermines the psychological or emotional health of about 96 % ofwomen globally (Weaver, 2015). This means that individuals andmembers of a modern family need descent clothes that will lead toemotional satisfaction and the overall well-being.

Currently, education is seen as the most critical tool that will drive humancivilization now as well as in the future. The modern society hasdeveloped a perception that education is critical in enhancing one’sstatus and facilitating the prosperity of families as well asindividual members of the modern society. Scholars have been able toestablish a link that exists between educational attainment andeconomic, health, and social progress (Bloom, 2013). In addition,UNESCO regards education as a basic right that should be accessed toall human beings. This is founded on the notion that educationenhances life skills, social skills, work skills, and give learnersthe confidence that need face challenges and lead a satisfying life(Bloom, 2013). In essence, education is the only reliable way ofhelping individuals as well as families to access employment andother economic benefits that life offers.

Bothindividuals and families need to lead healthy lives in order for themto remain productive and feel satisfied with the modern line. OttawaCharter that was developed to offer guidance in the process of healthpromotion held that health has become a significant resource forpeople’s daily life, and it is no longer seen as an object ofliving (WHO, 2015). This implies that individuals and families needquality, accessible, and affordable health care services. Some ofthe health care services that are needed by modern families as wellas individuals including screening services, counseling, andvaccination. This list of most needed health services shows thatpeople are more interested in preventive care services than treatmentin order to lead a satisfying life. An access to adequate preventivecare and affordable treatment services will help individuals as wellas their families pursue the rest of the basic needs.

Apartfrom increasing the list of perceived human needs, people have raisedthe standard of quality of food, shelter, and clothing, which havetraditionally been regarded as the fundamental needs. This isconsistent with the rationalist view because the intention toincrease the list of items that one needs to lead a life that isperceived to be satisfying is based on the availability ofinformation about those items. The list of basic needs has increasedthe digital and information ages because individuals and theirfamilies can access information, monitor global trends, andunderstand what they need to enhance their well-being and feelsatisfied with life.
